Economic Journalism Club hosts business lunch on energy issues

On 25 June the Economic Journalism Club hosted a business lunch to introduce thirteen journalists from daily newspapers and TV stations to current issues and project work in the energy sector. Mr. Amgalan Nordov and Mr. Khishigt Tamir, EPRC Energy Specialists, acted as facilitators and answered questions from participants. These questions ranged from the controversial “Mogoi River” Power Plant, for which construction began without a license, to the potential for building a nuclear power plant in Mongolia.

Corporate governance workshop for investigative journalists held

On 18-20 June, in cooperation with The Press Institute (PI) and the Corporate Governance Development Center (CGDC), the project hosted a two-day workshop on ‘Corporate Governance for Investigative Journalists.’ Participants included twenty journalists from newspapers, television and online news media,  including nine members of the EPRC-sponsored Economics Journalism Club.

Project continues seminars on ‘Conflict to resolution- costs, risks and avoidance’

The seminar series, ‘Conflict to resolution – costs, risks, and avoidance,’ continued in June with two seminars for government officials held on 17 and 18 June. After focusing on industry, civil society, and media in recent months, the project held seminars for government officials. Attendees included twenty-one civil servants in the mineral sector departments of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Petroleum Agency, and the Mineral Resources Agency.

Open Government sponsors multimedia chat on the role of the Fair Competition Authority

On 16 June, the Cabinet Secretariat’s Open Government website sponsored a nationally televised chat between policy makers and citizens on ‘What does Mongolia’s Competition Authority do for me?’ The program included panelists MP N. Altanhuyag, First Deputy Prime Minister; Mr. Mandakh, Chairman of the Authority for Fair Competition and Consumer Protection; Mr. Myagmarjav Lkhachinbal, Executive Director of the Mongolian Meat Association; Mr. S. Demberel, Chairman of the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce & Industry; Mr. B. Bold, CEO of Newcom Group; and Mr. G. Munkhbold, Attorney and CEO of Bold Partners Law Firm.

Economic Journalism Club holds its first round table discussion

On 28 May, the Economic Journalism Club (EJC), with support from the project, hosted its first roundtable discussion on the Role of Stock Markets in Corporate Governance at The Press Institute. Twelve journalists from print and television media stations attended the event. The goal of the roundtable discussion was to enhance EJC members’ knowledge of how stock exchanges can contribute to strengthening corporate governance practices in listed companies, particularly through increasing disclosure and transparency.

Mongolia Software Association and Mongolia Mining Association launch ‘Mine IT Expo’

On 27 May, the Mongolian Software Industry Association (MOSA), the Mongolian National Mining Association (MNMA), and the project, in partnership with the Responsible Mining Initiative (RMI) hosted the first Mine – IT Expo aimed at linking the information technology (IT) software industry and the mining sector of Mongolia to create opportunities for IT companies to serve the rapidly expanding mining sector.

Third Mongolia Corporate Governance Forum held

On 27 May, the Corporate Governance Development Center (CGDC) hosted the Third Mongolia Corporate Governance Forum with more than 130 participants from the private and public sectors in attendance. The project collaborated with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Business Council of Mongolia (BCM), Eurasia Capital, Golomt Bank and other partners to organize the event.

Agency for Fair Competition and Consumer Protection signs MoU with EPRC/USAID

On 26 May, D. Mandakh, Chairman of the Agency for Fair Competition and Consumer Protection (AFCCP) and Fernando Bertoli, Chief of Party of USAID/EPRC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aiming to assist the Authority in developing its public communications and capacity to conduct market analyses.
